Limitations to know
- Some software labels binary units (GiB) as “GB”. Check whether a number uses 1,000 or 1,024.
- Results are shown to up to 10 significant digits; extremely large or small values switch to scientific notation (e.g. 1.5e-12).
Privacy: Data Storage Converter runs entirely in your web browser. Your Number data is not uploaded, stored or shared, and nothing about its contents is sent to analytics.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?
Drive makers use decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes). Windows shows binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes) but labels them “GB”. 10¹² bytes is 931.3 GiB.
Is 1 KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
Officially 1 kB = 1,000 bytes and 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. In everyday use “KB” is sometimes used for 1,024 bytes.
